; Professor of the Biology of Ageing at Durham University, Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Magnitude Biosciences Ltd, and Chair of the British Society for Research on Ageing (BSRA)
David Weinkove is a Professor of the Biology of Ageing at Durham University, Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Magnitude Biosciences Ltd, and Chair of the British Society for Research on Ageing (BSRA). His background is in basic science, particularly in biochemistry and genetics in model organisms. After a PhD characterising Drosophila PI 3-kinases, he switched to the nematode C. elegans. He discovered that inhibiting folate synthesis in the bacteria E. coli that makes C. elegans that feed on it live much longer. Magnitude Biosciences works with many companies around the world and has given David a wide view of industry. His BSRA work has given him experience in the charity sector. He has worked in 4 different countries. He was asked to contribute a paper of the Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research on the biology of ageing in the UK, barriers to translation and recommendations to overcome them. The findings of this study will form the basis of his talk.
The UK has a long history of research into the biology of ageing. In the last few years, with an ageing population having a large impact on society, the pressure to turn ageing research into real world interventions is stronger than ever. However, research in this area and its translation faces considerable barriers. In this talk, I will discuss my thoughts on how these challenges can be overcome. After consultation with various stakeholders including basic scientists, clinicians, industry, funders and investors, I will propose solutions that are not just increasing resources but involve capacity building, challenging ways of thinking about ageing and the building of constructive partnerships across other areas of biomedical research, clinicians and industry.
Please note: If you're located off the Babraham Research Campus and would like to attend this talk, please contact kec@babraham.ac.uk by the 16th July for assistance with Campus security registration
